# Buying committee (buying group)

A buying committee is the group of people at a company who influence or approve a purchase, such as the end user, budget owner, technical evaluator, procurement and legal. In B2B, most significant purchases need several of them to agree.

## What Is Buying Committee (Buying Group)?

**In short:** Roles vary by deal, but a typical committee includes a champion who wants the change, an economic buyer who controls the budget, users who will live with the product, technical or security reviewers, procurement and sometimes legal or finance.

Forrester's 2026 buyer research found the typical buying decision includes 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers, more for complex purchases.

It matters because a deal sold to one person is fragile. If your only contact leaves or loses the internal argument, the deal stalls. Mapping the committee early, and knowing who you have not reached yet, makes the forecast more honest and protects against deals that end in 'no decision'.

## Buying Committee Example

Example: a vendor selling a $60,000-a-year security platform to a 1,000-person company maps 7 people: the CISO (economic buyer), a security engineer (champion), two IT admins (users), a procurement manager, the CFO and in-house counsel. The account executive runs a separate thread with each and tracks who has seen a demo.

## Buying Committee in Practice

Outbound teams multi-thread: they contact several people per account with messages written for each role, so the CFO hears about cost and the operations lead hears about workload. Qualification frameworks like MEDDPICC make the roles explicit with fields for the economic buyer and the champion.

## FAQ

### How many people are in a B2B buying committee?

It varies with deal size and risk. Forrester's 2026 research put the typical buying decision at 13 internal stakeholders plus nine external influencers, with more for complex or strategic purchases.

### Who is on a buying committee?

Usually a champion, an economic buyer who owns the budget, end users, technical or security evaluators, procurement and sometimes legal, finance or an executive sponsor.

### Is a buying committee the same as a buying group?

Yes. Buying committee, buying group, buying center and decision-making unit (DMU) all describe the people involved in one purchase decision.

### How do you sell to a buying committee?

Map the roles early, reach several people with messages written for what each one cares about, give your champion material to make the case internally and track which roles you have not reached yet.
