# Signal-based selling

Signal-based selling is an outbound approach that times and targets outreach on observable buying signals, such as funding, a new executive hire, job postings, technology changes or intent activity, so you contact accounts when a need is more likely.

## What Is Signal-Based Selling?

**In short:** Signals fall into three groups.

Company events: funding, mergers and acquisitions, expansion, new executives and hiring sprees. Technology changes: adopting or dropping a tool. Engagement and intent: visits to your pricing page, research on your topic, a contact who changed jobs. HubSpot's sales workspace, for example, groups buying signals into seven types, from visitor intent to job changes and form submissions, and LinkedIn Sales Navigator alerts sellers when an account raises money or a lead changes jobs.

The approach works because timing and relevance drive replies. An email that mentions the three SDR roles a company just posted gives the prospect a reason the message is about them and reaches them while the problem is fresh. It also narrows a market of thousands of accounts to the few hundred showing a signal this week.

## Signal-Based Selling Example

For example, a recruiting software company watches 4,000 target accounts for 5 or more open sales roles. In one month, 260 accounts qualify. Each gets an email that names the open roles and the time-to-hire problem. The signal-based campaign gets replies from 6.1% of recipients, against 2.3% for the same team's untargeted campaign.

## Signal-Based Selling in Practice

Teams run it as a system: pick a few signals that came before past deals, monitor them across target accounts, rank accounts by signal strength and fit, and start a sequence or a rep task with the signal in the first line. Track reply and meeting rates per signal and drop the ones that do not convert. A signal is a hint, not a buying decision, so the message should offer help rather than assume a need.

## FAQ

### What are buying signals in sales?

Events or behaviors that suggest an account may need what you sell, such as funding, leadership changes, hiring for specific roles, adopting a new tool, website visits or a champion changing jobs.

### What is a trigger event in sales?

HubSpot defines a trigger event as any occurrence that creates an opening for a marketing or sales opportunity, such as new executives, expansion, mergers and acquisitions, changes in hiring or new funding.

### What is the difference between signal-based selling and intent data?

Intent data is one kind of signal: research activity suggesting an account is in market. Signal-based selling uses intent alongside company events, technology changes and engagement to decide whom to contact and when.

### How do you find buying signals?

Track funding news, job postings, leadership changes and technology changes for your target accounts, plus your own website and email engagement. LinkedIn Sales Navigator, for example, sends alerts when an account raises money or a lead changes jobs.
