# Ken + OpenRouter Integration

Add your OpenRouter API key in Ken to run campaign AI steps on OpenRouter models at 0 Ken credits, because OpenRouter bills your own account for the tokens.

## What the Integration Does

**In short:** Your own OpenRouter key runs campaign AI steps on OpenRouter models at 0 Ken credits.

Adding a OpenRouter key unlocks OpenRouter models in the model picker for your campaign AI steps: qualification, personalization, segmentation and rewriting. Steps that run on a OpenRouter model use your key, cost 0 Ken credits, and OpenRouter bills your account for the tokens.

If your key stops working, Ken runs the step on its default model and charges credits, unless you turn Ken fallback off. Then the step waits until your key works again.

## What Syncs

**In short:** One-way: Ken calls OpenRouter with your key.

**What syncs between Ken and OpenRouter**

| Object | Direction | Frequency |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Prompts for campaign AI steps on OpenRouter models | Ken to OpenRouter | Each time a step runs |
| Model output (qualification, personalization, segmentation, rewrites) | OpenRouter to Ken | Each time a step runs |
| Key status (healthy, invalid, rate limited) | OpenRouter to Ken | On save, on re-check and on each call |

## How to Connect OpenRouter

**In short:** Connect OpenRouter in 4 steps.

1. **Get your OpenRouter API key**: Create a key on the OpenRouter keys page (openrouter.ai/keys). You can give the key a credit limit there.
2. **Open provider keys in Ken**: In Ken, go to Settings, then Integrations. Under AI providers, open OpenRouter and choose Add key. Only workspace admins can manage provider keys.
3. **Save the key**: Paste the key and save. Ken checks the key with OpenRouter before storing it and confirms the account has credits.
4. **Pick OpenRouter models**: In a campaign's AI settings, pick a OpenRouter model for qualification, personalization, segmentation and rewriting. Steps on that model run on your key.

## Use Cases

**In short:** 3 ways teams use Ken with OpenRouter.

- Run qualification and personalization on the OpenRouter models your team already trusts.
- Keep model spend on your own OpenRouter bill and out of Ken credits.
- Run each agency client workspace on that client's own key.

## Limits

**In short:** Your key runs campaign AI steps only (qualification, personalization, segmentation and rewriting). Ken chats do not use it yet.

- Your key runs campaign AI steps only (qualification, personalization, segmentation and rewriting). Ken chats do not use it yet.
- With Ken fallback on, a failed key means Ken runs the step on its default model, which can be a different provider, and charges credits.
- Set a credit limit on the key in OpenRouter to cap what Ken can spend on it.
- Keys belong to one workspace. Each client workspace needs its own key.
- Only workspace admins can add, re-check or remove a key.
