## Plays That Work

**In short:** 5 outbound plays for wholesalers, each tied to a trigger you can spot.

**Outbound plays for wholesalers**

| Play | Channel | Trigger | Angle | Example first line |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| New location opening | Email | A store, restaurant or contractor announced a new location, filed for a building or liquor permit, or posted jobs for an opening team. | Write to the Owner or General Manager before opening day, while suppliers for the new site are still open, with your delivery days for that address. | Saw that [Company] is opening a new location, and our trucks already run that route if you want a supplier lined up before opening. |
| Food traceability records | Email | A restaurant group or grocer posts a food safety job or asks suppliers about lot codes ahead of the Food Traceability Rule, which Congress directed FDA not to enforce before July 20, 2028. | Write to the Purchasing Manager or food safety lead at restaurant groups and grocers and offer traceability lot codes for foods on FDA's Food Traceability List with every delivery. | If [Company] is setting up records for foods on FDA's Food Traceability List, we can send traceability lot codes with every delivery we make to you. |
| Contractor wins a project | Email | A contractor won a public bid or pulled permits for a large commercial job. | Write to the Purchasing Manager or Project Manager with a project price on the materials list and deliveries timed to the job schedule. | Saw [Company] won the school renovation bid, and we can quote the materials list as one project price with deliveries timed to your schedule. |
| New buyer in the seat | Email and LinkedIn | A retailer, restaurant group or contractor hired a new Purchasing Manager or buyer, which shows on LinkedIn. | Connect with the new buyer on LinkedIn, then email a short line card with case prices for the categories they now own. | Saw you took over purchasing at [Company], and we deliver paper and janitorial supplies to businesses near you, so here is our line card with case prices. |
| Nearby distributor change | Email | A distributor serving the same area closed a branch, merged or cut delivery days. | Write to the Owner of accounts in the area the other distributor served, with your delivery days and an offer to price their current order guide. | If the branch closure nearby changes your deliveries, we already serve [Company]'s area and can price your current order guide this week. |

## Campaigns or 1:1 Accounts?

**In short:** With 667,949 buyers and a typical deal of $6,000-$60,000 (estimate), volume outbound in Campaigns fits best.

**Lane check for wholesalers**

| Check | Wholesalers | Points to Accounts (Coming) when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Typical deal (estimate) | $6,000-$60,000 (first-year purchases from one business account), midpoint $33,000 | Over $15,000 |
| Buyer companies in Ken's database | 667,949 | Fewer than 25,000 |
| Suggested lane | Campaigns | Both checks pass |

Ken's estimate: 12 months of $500-$5,000 in monthly orders from one store, restaurant or contractor. It assumes you supply one product category, not the account's whole spend.

Ken's view: when one deal is worth more than $15,000 and there are fewer than 25,000 buyers, each account is worth researching and writing to one by one. Otherwise volume wins: a Campaign of short email and LinkedIn sequences reaches more of the market for the same effort.

## Objections

**In short:** What buyers tend to say back to wholesalers, and how to answer.

**Objections wholesalers hear from buyers**

| Objection | How to answer |
| --- | --- |
| We already have a main distributor. | That's fine. Send your order guide for one category and we'll price it line by line, so you have a backup for shortages and a price check on your main supplier. |
| Your minimum order is too high for us. | Tell us your usual weekly order and we'll say plainly whether it clears our minimum and which delivery day fits. If it doesn't, we'll tell you instead of wasting your time. |
| Opening a new supplier account is a hassle. | We keep it to one credit application, and you can start with one category so your main order stays where it is. |

## FAQ

### How do wholesalers get clients?

In Ken's view, most wholesale distributors grow through route sales reps, trade shows, referrals and buyers who call when their current supplier falls short. Outbound reaches stores, restaurants and contractors when they open a location, win a project or change buyers, often before a rep would walk in.

### Should we email the owner or the buyer?

At businesses with 1-10 employees the owner usually places orders, so write to them. Larger retailers, restaurant groups and contractors have a Purchasing Manager or buyer who owns the supplier list, and that is your contact.

### What should our first email to a new account include?

The category you supply, your delivery days for their address, your order minimum and one specific offer, such as pricing their current order guide. Leave the full catalog out; one category they buy every week is easier to say yes to.

### Does FDA's Food Traceability Rule matter for food wholesalers?

The rule covers persons who manufacture, process, pack or hold foods on FDA's Food Traceability List, and FDA says Congress directed it not to enforce the rule before July 20, 2028. If your buyers hold those foods, a supplier who sends traceability lot codes with each delivery makes their records easier to keep. This is general information, not legal advice.

### What does the CAN-SPAM Act require of a cold email?

In the US, the CAN-SPAM Act covers commercial email, and the FTC says it makes no exception for business-to-business email. Its requirements: no false or misleading header information, no deceptive subject lines, identify the message as an ad, include your valid physical postal address, tell recipients how to opt out, honor opt-outs within 10 business days, and monitor anyone who sends email on your behalf. Other countries have their own rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
