Ideal customer profile (ICP)

An ideal customer profile (ICP) describes the type of company that gets the most value from your product and brings you the most value back, defined by traits such as industry, size, location, technology and the problem they have.

What Is Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)?

In short An ICP describes companies, not people.

A buyer persona describes the individuals inside those companies: their role, goals and objections. A useful ICP mixes firmographics (industry, employee count, revenue, region), technographics (the tools they use) and a trigger that makes them likely to buy now, such as a funding round or a new sales leader.

You build it from your best current customers: the ones who closed fastest, pay the most, churn least and would refer you. Find what they share and write it down as filters someone else could apply to a database. If two people would build different lists from your ICP, it's too vague.

Ideal Customer Profile Example

Example ICP for an HR software vendor: US and Canadian professional services firms with 50 to 500 employees, using Google Workspace and a separate payroll provider, that have hired an HR manager in the last 12 months. The filters are specific enough that two reps would pull nearly the same accounts.

Ideal Customer Profile in Practice

Outbound depends on the ICP more than any other channel, because you choose who receives the message. A tight ICP tends to raise reply rates and protects sender reputation, since fewer uninterested people mark your emails as spam. Teams usually keep one ICP per product line and check it each quarter against closed-won deals.

FAQ

What is the difference between an ICP and a buyer persona?

An ICP describes the companies worth selling to; a buyer persona describes the people inside them. HubSpot's summary: ICPs tell you which companies are worth speaking to, personas tell you who you're speaking to.

How do you create an ideal customer profile?

Start with your best current customers, the ones who bought fastest, pay most and stay longest. List what they share in industry, size, location, tools and the problem they bought for, then check the profile against won and lost deals in your CRM.

What should a B2B ICP include?

Firmographics (industry, employee count, revenue, region), technographics (the tools they use), the pain point and how urgent it is, and any buying triggers. HubSpot also lists budget and geographic or legal constraints.

How often should you update your ICP?

Review it every quarter against new won, lost and churned customers, and rewrite it when you launch a product or enter a new market.
