Email open rate
Email open rate is the percentage of delivered emails that recipients opened, measured by a tracking pixel that loads when the email's images display. Privacy features such as Apple Mail Privacy Protection now trigger automatic opens, so it is a rough signal.
What Is Email Open Rate?
In short Senders add a tiny, invisible image to each email.
When the recipient's mail app loads it, the sender logs an open. Unique open rate counts each recipient once; total opens count every load. Delivered means sent minus bounces. Mailchimp defines open rate as the share of successfully delivered emails that recipients opened.
Apple announced Mail Privacy Protection in June 2021. In Apple Mail it downloads remote content, tracking pixels included, in the background whether or not the person engages with the email, so senders record opens that never happened. Mailchimp warns that bot activity, including Apple's, can falsely inflate open and click metrics. The result: open rates run high and swing with your audience's mail apps.
Email Open Rate Example
Open rate = unique opens / delivered emails x 100For example, a campaign sends 2,000 emails and 40 bounce, so 1,960 are delivered. The pixel records 1,100 unique opens, a 56% open rate. But 700 of the recipients use Apple Mail with privacy protection, so many of those opens are automatic. The 52 replies, 2.7% of delivered emails, are the number to trust.
Email Open Rate in Practice
Many cold email teams turn open tracking off and measure what people do instead: reply rate, positive reply rate and meetings booked. If you keep opens, use them only as a relative check. A sudden drop across every campaign at once can point to a deliverability problem worth investigating.
FAQ
How do you calculate email open rate?
Divide unique opens by delivered emails (sent minus bounces) and multiply by 100. For example, 450 unique opens from 1,500 delivered emails is a 30% open rate.
Why is my open rate so high?
Usually machine opens. Apple Mail Privacy Protection loads tracking pixels in the background whether or not the person reads the email, and other bots do the same, so reported opens overstate real reads.
Is open rate still a useful metric?
Only as a rough, relative signal. Since Apple's 2021 privacy change, opens no longer show who actually read an email. Replies, clicks and meetings booked are more reliable.
What is the difference between open rate and reply rate?
Open rate counts tracking-pixel loads, which software can trigger. Reply rate counts people who wrote back, so for cold email it is the metric that reflects real interest.
