Sales cycle
A sales cycle is the sequence of steps from first contact with a prospect to a closed deal, and sales cycle length is the average time those steps take, usually measured in days from opportunity creation to closed won.
What Is Sales Cycle?
In short A typical B2B cycle runs through prospecting, first meeting, discovery, demo or solution, proposal, negotiation and close.
Its length depends on deal size, how many people must approve, how new the category is and whether procurement or a security review is involved. A small purchase can close in a week, while Salesforce notes that a product worth thousands or millions of dollars can take more than a year.
Length matters because it drives everything downstream: how much pipeline you need, how long new reps take to ramp, cash flow and how fast you learn whether a new segment works. At the same win rate and deal size, a shorter cycle means more revenue from the same team.
Sales Cycle Example
Average sales cycle length = total days from opportunity creation to close across closed-won deals / number of closed-won dealsExample: a team closed 4 deals last quarter that took 45, 60, 75 and 100 days from opportunity creation to close. The average sales cycle is (45 + 60 + 75 + 100) / 4 = 70 days.
Sales Cycle in Practice
Measure from a consistent start point and on won deals, or the average gets skewed by deals that die slowly. Outbound shapes the front of the cycle: reaching the right person with a clear reason to talk shortens the time from first touch to first meeting, which is where many weeks get lost.
FAQ
How do you calculate sales cycle length?
Add up the days each closed-won deal took from opportunity creation (or first meeting) to close, then divide by the number of deals. Use the same start point every time.
What are the stages of a sales cycle?
Most B2B cycles move through prospecting, qualification, discovery, demo or proposal, negotiation and close. Some teams add onboarding and expansion after the sale.
How do you shorten a sales cycle?
Qualify harder at the start, reach the budget owner and other decision makers early, agree on a mutual timeline with the buyer and remove delays you control, like slow proposals and security paperwork.
How long is a typical B2B sales cycle?
It ranges widely. Simple deals can close in a week or a couple of months, and large purchases can take more than a year because of extra decision makers, procurement, legal and security reviews. Track your own average by segment and deal size.
