Spintax
Spintax (spin syntax) is a text format that writes alternatives inside braces separated by pipes, such as {Hi|Hello|Hey}. A sending tool picks one option per email, so each recipient gets a slightly different version of the same message.
What Is Spintax?
In short A line like {Hi|Hello} {{firstName}}, {quick question|one question} about {{company}} produces 4 versions, and every extra group multiplies the count.
The tool resolves the spintax at send time, so your editor holds one template. Syntax varies by tool: Woodpecker, for example, writes the same idea as {{SPINTAX | "Hi" | "Hello"}}.
The aim is to stop thousands of near-identical messages from looking like one bulk blast. The reasoning is that spam filters may group messages with the same content, so small differences between copies make each one look less like a mass mailing. No mailbox provider documents how it treats spintax, so the benefit is a claim from the tools that sell it.
Spintax Example
Example: {Hi|Hello|Hey} {{firstName}}, {saw|noticed} that {{company}} {is hiring|just hired} SDRs gives 3 x 2 x 2 = 12 versions. Across 600 sends from 6 mailboxes, each version goes out about 50 times instead of 600.
Spintax in Practice
Ken's view: spintax is a weak tool on its own. Synonym swaps leave the structure and the offer unchanged, and careless variants read oddly to humans. A line about the recipient's company or role does more for both inbox placement and replies. If you use spintax, keep it to greetings and sign-offs, and preview every variant before sending.
FAQ
What is spintax?
A way to write several versions of a sentence at once, with alternatives in braces separated by pipes: {Hi|Hello|Hey}. A sending tool picks one option per email.
How does spintax work?
At send time the tool picks one option from each group. Three greetings and two openers give 6 versions of the email, and each recipient gets one of them.
Does every tool use the same spintax syntax?
No. Smartlead documents the common {option|option} form, while Woodpecker uses {{SPINTAX | "Hi" | "Hello"}} and supports it in both subject lines and email copy. Check your tool's docs before you paste templates between platforms.
Does spintax help email deliverability?
No mailbox provider documents it either way. Tools that support spintax say it helps avoid spam filters. Ken's view: it changes words, not structure or offer, and personalization that changes what the email says about each recipient helps more.

Campaigns doesn't support spintax: in its editor, {a|b} means variable a with fallback b, not a random pick. Each email varies through per-contact variables and AI-written personalization instead.
