Unique selling proposition (USP)
A unique selling proposition (USP) is the one benefit that sets your product apart from every competitor and that buyers care about. It's narrower than a value proposition: it states the single reason to choose you instead of an alternative.
What Is Unique Selling Proposition (USP)?
In short The term comes from advertising.
It was popularized by Reality in Advertising, a 1961 book by the chairman of the Ted Bates & Company agency, which argued that every ad should give buyers a unique and compelling reason to buy. In B2B the same test applies: a USP has to be specific, true only of you, and tied to something the buyer already wants.
A USP is different from a value proposition. The value proposition explains the full outcome you deliver; the USP is the part of it a competitor can't claim. "We help sales teams book more meetings" is a value proposition every vendor shares. A USP names the thing only you do, and it has to be true and provable.
Unique Selling Proposition Example
Example: three CRMs pitch a 20-person roofing contractor. Two promise "easy pipeline management". The third leads with "Quotes, crew schedules and invoices in one app built for roofers, set up in a day". The first two end up competing on price; the third gives the buyer a reason they can repeat to a business partner.
Unique Selling Proposition in Practice
Sales teams use the USP in competitive deals and in short-form outreach. A cold email or LinkedIn message has room for one differentiator, so reps open with the USP that matters most to that segment and save the rest for the call.
FAQ
What is the difference between a USP and a value proposition?
A value proposition covers the full value a customer gets and can overlap with competitors. A USP is the single point of difference that no competitor offers. Most companies need both: the value proposition to explain, the USP to win the comparison.
Who came up with the unique selling proposition?
The idea came out of the Ted Bates & Company advertising agency. Its chairman popularized it in the 1961 book Reality in Advertising, which framed the USP as a unique and compelling reason why to buy.
What makes a good USP?
It's specific, it's true only of you, it matters to the buyer, and you can prove it. "Best customer service" fails on all four; "Support replies in under 10 minutes, 24/7, from engineers" can pass if you can show it.
Is a USP the same as a slogan?
No. A slogan is a memorable line; a USP is the underlying reason to buy. The slogan may express the USP, but the USP has to hold up in a sales conversation without the wordplay.
