Agentic AI

Agentic AI is artificial intelligence that pursues a goal with limited supervision: it plans the steps, calls tools and software, checks the results and adjusts, instead of answering one prompt and waiting for a person to act.

What Is Agentic AI?

In short An agentic system wraps a large language model in a loop.

It reads a goal, decides the next step, calls a tool such as a search API, a CRM or an email platform, checks the result and repeats until the goal is met or a limit stops it. AWS describes the cycle as perceive, reason, act and learn.

Anthropic draws a useful line inside agentic systems: workflows, where code fixes the path the model and tools follow, and agents, where the model directs its own steps and tool use. Most sales systems mix the two: fixed steps for what must happen the same way every time, model-directed steps for research and judgment.

Agentic AI Example

For example, a sales team gives an agent the goal: book 10 meetings this month with US logistics companies of 200 to 1,000 employees. The agent pulls 1,500 matching companies, keeps 400 that fit the ICP, finds a verified contact at each, drafts a three-step sequence for a manager to approve, and routes the 12 interested replies to the SDRs.

Agentic AI in Practice

For B2B sales and outbound teams, agentic AI pays off on high-volume, rule-bound work: building lead lists, checking accounts against an ideal customer profile, writing first drafts and sorting replies. Keep a person on steps with real cost, such as approving new copy before it reaches thousands of inboxes, and log every action the agent takes.

FAQ

What is the difference between agentic AI and generative AI?

Generative AI creates content, such as text or images, when you prompt it. Agentic AI builds on generative models and uses their output to pursue a goal, calling tools and deciding next steps with limited supervision.

What is the difference between agentic AI and an AI agent?

An AI agent is one program that works toward a goal with tools. Agentic AI is the broader approach and the systems built from one or more agents, including multi-agent setups where an orchestrator coordinates several agents.

What are examples of agentic AI?

Coding agents that change and test code, customer service agents that resolve tickets, incident response automation, and sales research agents that find accounts, check them against your criteria and draft outreach.

What are the risks of agentic AI?

Errors can compound across steps, agents can take actions with real cost such as sending emails or changing records, and they are harder to test and debug than a single prompt. Teams limit permissions, log every action and require approval for risky steps.
