Go-to-market strategy (GTM strategy)
A go-to-market (GTM) strategy is the plan for how a company brings a product to a specific market: who the target customer is, what problem it solves for them, how it is priced and which channels reach and sell to them.
What Is Go-to-Market Strategy (GTM Strategy)?
In short A GTM strategy answers a short list of questions: which segment you sell to first (your ideal customer profile and buyer personas), what you say to them (positioning and value proposition), what it costs (pricing and packaging), how buyers find and buy it (the motion: sales-led, product-led, partner-led or a mix) and how you will measure progress.
It matters because the same product can fail in one market and work in another. Many launch problems are GTM problems: the wrong segment, a message that does not land or a channel that costs more than a customer is worth.
Go-to-Market Strategy Example
Example: a startup with an invoice automation tool picks US accounting firms with 10 to 50 staff as its first segment, prices at $99 a month per firm and chooses outbound email plus a free trial as its motion. In this example a 3-week test to 1,500 firms gets a 4% reply rate, so the team commits to that segment for two quarters.
Go-to-Market Strategy in Practice
For outbound teams, the GTM strategy decides the list and the message. A good one is specific enough to turn into a search: industry, company size, region, job titles and the trigger that makes the problem urgent. Teams often test two or three segments with small outbound campaigns before committing budget to one.
FAQ
What are the key elements of a go-to-market strategy?
TechTarget lists five: market definition, customers, distribution model, product messaging and positioning, and price. Most teams add the metrics they will use to judge progress.
What is the difference between a GTM strategy and a marketing strategy?
A GTM strategy is a cross-functional plan for bringing one product to one market, covering sales, pricing and channels. A marketing strategy is the company's ongoing approach to promoting its brand.
What are the types of go-to-market motions?
Sales-led (reps run the deal), product-led (users sign up and buy on their own), partner-led (resellers and agencies sell for you) and marketing-led. Many companies combine two or more.
What is an example of a go-to-market strategy?
A startup targets US accounting firms with 10 to 50 staff, positions on saving month-end hours, prices per firm and reaches them through cold email and a free trial.
