RevOps (revenue operations)

Revenue operations (RevOps) is the function that runs the systems, data and processes behind marketing, sales and customer success as one revenue team, so all three share the same pipeline numbers, tools and definitions.

What Is RevOps (Revenue Operations)?

In short Before RevOps, marketing ops, sales ops and customer success ops often worked apart, each with its own tools and its own idea of a qualified lead.

RevOps puts them under one owner. Typical work: running the CRM, defining lifecycle stages, routing leads, building forecasts and dashboards, managing the tool stack, and setting territory and compensation rules.

The payoff is one version of the truth. When the three teams agree on stage definitions and data, forecasts get more accurate, handoffs stop dropping leads and leaders can see where revenue is actually lost.

RevOps Example

Example: at a 120-person SaaS company, marketing reports 300 qualified leads a month while sales says it gets 90. The new RevOps lead writes one lead definition, rebuilds routing in the CRM and starts a weekly pipeline review. Three months later both teams report the same number.

RevOps in Practice

For outbound, RevOps decides how sequences connect to the CRM: which contacts get enrolled, how replies and meetings are logged, how duplicates are blocked and how pipeline is credited to a campaign. A clean setup is what lets you trust the number of meetings outbound says it booked.

FAQ

What is the difference between RevOps and sales ops?

Sales ops supports the sales team only. RevOps covers the whole revenue cycle, marketing, sales and customer success, with shared systems, data and definitions.

What does a RevOps manager do?

They own the CRM and the rest of the go-to-market tool stack, define funnel stages, route leads, build forecasts and dashboards, and fix the processes where leads or deals get lost between teams.

What teams does RevOps cover?

Usually marketing, sales and customer success, and sometimes finance for billing and forecasting. The exact scope varies by company.

When should a company hire RevOps?

Often when marketing, sales and success each have their own tools and the numbers stop matching, for example when leads get lost in handoff or the forecast keeps missing.
