GTM engineer

A GTM engineer is a technical go-to-market role that builds automated systems for finding, enriching and contacting prospects, combining data sources, AI, scripts and sales tools so a small team can run outbound at scale.

What Is GTM Engineer?

In short Clay says it coined the term in 2023 and defines GTM engineering as the practice of building automated revenue systems using AI, data enrichment and workflow automation.

Where a sales ops manager keeps the CRM clean, a GTM engineer builds the workflows that feed it: pulling target accounts, enriching contacts from several data sources, scoring them on signals like hiring or funding, drafting personalized first lines with an LLM and pushing the result into sequences.

Day to day, GTM engineers work with enrichment tools, APIs, webhooks, workflow automation platforms and, more and more, AI agents connected to sales tools. Clay calls RevOps the most common starting point for the role.

GTM Engineer Example

Example: a GTM engineer at a 30-person startup builds a weekly workflow: pull companies that posted a sales ops job in the last 7 days, find the VP of Sales and the RevOps lead at each, verify their emails, have an LLM write a first line about the job post and enroll them in a 4-step sequence. It covers 300 accounts a week without an SDR building lists.

GTM Engineer in Practice

The role exists because outbound got harder to do by hand. Mailbox providers filter generic bulk email, so volume alone stops working, and the teams that still get replies target narrowly and personalize at scale. The GTM engineer builds and maintains the system that does that.

FAQ

What does a GTM engineer do?

They build the automated workflows behind outbound and other revenue work: list building, enrichment, scoring, AI-written personalization, routing and syncing to the CRM and sequencer.

What is the difference between a GTM engineer and RevOps?

In Clay's framing, RevOps keeps the existing motion running and GTM engineering changes what the motion is. In practice the line is blurry, and in small teams one person often does both.

Do GTM engineers need to code?

Not always, but it helps. Much of the work happens in no-code enrichment and automation tools, while scripts, APIs and webhooks cover what those tools cannot.

What skills does a GTM engineer need?

Knowledge of outbound and the sales process, comfort with data and APIs, workflow automation, prompt writing for LLMs and enough judgment about deliverability to keep volume from burning domains.
