Plays That Work
In short 5 outbound plays for insurance agents, each tied to a trigger you can spot.
| Play | Channel | Trigger | Angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Benefits plan year coming up | The company's group health plan year starts in three to five months. Insured plans with 100 or more participants file a Form 5500 each year, and the filing shows the plan year. | Write to the HR Director or CFO about getting competing group health quotes in before the incumbent broker presents the renewal. | |
| Example first line[Company]'s group health plan renews in a few months, and carriers need your census well before then to give you a competing quote. | |||
| Headcount nearing 50 | Job postings and headcount growth put the company near 50 full-time employees. The IRS treats an employer that averaged at least 50 full-time employees, including full-time equivalents, in the prior year as an applicable large employer for the current year. | Write to the CEO or HR Director at a company growing toward 50 full-time employees about what the ACA employer rules mean for its benefits budget. | |
| Example first lineWith [Company] hiring this fast, your average headcount may pass 50 full-time employees this year, which brings the ACA employer rules into play next year. | |||
| Hiring drivers | The company posts jobs for CDL or delivery drivers, or adds vehicles to its fleet. | Write to the owner or Director of Operations about commercial auto and workers' comp before new drivers and vehicles go on the road. | |
| Example first lineI saw [Company] is hiring drivers, so it's worth checking that your commercial auto schedule and workers' comp payroll estimate match the fleet you will run this year. | |||
| New location | The company announces a new office, warehouse or store, or its new lease shows up in local business press. | Write to the CFO or controller about property and general liability limits and the certificate of insurance the new landlord will ask for. | |
| Example first lineCongrats on the new location - the lease likely sets insurance limits for [Company], and I can check your current policies against that language before move-in. | |||
| Large customer contract | Email and LinkedIn | The company announces a new enterprise or government customer, or posts a security compliance role. | Write to the CEO or COO of a services firm that just won a large customer about the cyber and professional liability limits the contract requires. |
| Example first lineNew enterprise contracts usually come with an insurance exhibit, and I can check whether [Company]'s cyber and professional liability limits meet it before you sign. | |||
Campaigns or 1:1 Accounts?
In short With 719,823 buyers and a typical deal of $2,500-$10,000 (estimate), volume outbound in Campaigns fits best.
| Check | Insurance Agents | Points to Accounts (Coming) when |
|---|---|---|
| Typical deal (estimate) | $2,500-$10,000 (first-year commission on one business account), midpoint $6,250 | Over $15,000 |
| Buyer companies in Ken's database | 719,823 | Fewer than 25,000 |
| Suggested lane | Campaigns | Both checks pass |
Ken's estimate: an assumed 3-5% commission on group health premiums for 10-20 covered workers at the $9,211 average single premium the source reports for firms with 10-199 workers, plus a small property and casualty package. The commission rate is an assumption, not a published figure.
Ken's view: when one deal is worth more than $15,000 and there are fewer than 25,000 buyers, each account is worth researching and writing to one by one. Otherwise volume wins: a Campaign of short email and LinkedIn sequences reaches more of the market for the same effort.
Objections
In short What buyers tend to say back to insurance agents, and how to answer.
| Objection | How to answer |
|---|---|
| We've used the same broker for years. | That's fine. Send me your declarations pages before the next renewal and I'll show you where coverage or price differs. If nothing does, you've confirmed your broker is doing the job. |
| Our renewal isn't for months. | That's the right time to start. Carriers quote from your applications and loss runs, and starting early leaves room to shop the account instead of taking the renewal as offered. |
| We get our benefits through a PEO. | I can price a standalone group plan with your census next to the PEO's bundled rate, so you can see whether the PEO still costs less at your headcount. |
FAQ
How do insurance agents get clients?
In Ken's view, on the commercial side, most accounts come from referrals by accountants, attorneys and current clients, plus adding lines to accounts you already write. Outbound adds businesses whose needs just changed, like a company hiring drivers, opening a location or nearing 50 employees, and reaches them before their renewal.
Can I use outbound for personal lines?
This page covers commercial lines and employee benefits only. Home, auto and life policies for individuals are consumer sales, outside the buyer counts and plays here, which reach owners, finance leads and HR leads at companies.
When should I contact a business about its renewal?
Start three to five months before the renewal date. That leaves time to collect applications and loss runs, get carrier quotes and present them before the incumbent's renewal offer lands.
What does the CAN-SPAM Act require of a cold email?
In the US, the CAN-SPAM Act covers commercial email, and the FTC says it makes no exception for business-to-business email. Its requirements: no false or misleading header information, no deceptive subject lines, identify the message as an ad, include your valid physical postal address, tell recipients how to opt out, honor opt-outs within 10 business days, and monitor anyone who sends email on your behalf. Other countries have their own rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
