What the phone number formatter does

It turns phone numbers in any local format into E.164, the international format dialers and CRMs expect: a plus sign, the country code and the number, with no spaces. "020 7946 0958" with country UK becomes +442079460958, and "(201) 555-0123" with country US becomes +12015550123.

The country comes from a column in your file or from a default you set. Parsing and validation use Google's libphonenumber metadata, which knows the length and prefix rules for every country.

How to read the result

Each row shows the original number, the E.164 number and a status. Valid numbers fit the country's numbering plan. Invalid ones have the wrong length or a prefix the country does not use, and are left unchanged and flagged, so a bad number never turns into a plausible-looking one.

How to use it

Drop a CSV or paste numbers one per line. If the file has a country column, map it, because a number without a country code means different things in different countries. Otherwise set the default country for the list. Download the file and import it as text, not as a number, or Excel will drop the plus sign.

Why it matters for outbound

Dialers, SMS tools and CRMs match and dial on E.164. A list with three formats for the same number dedupes badly, dials the wrong country, or fails to import. A valid format does not prove the number is in service, but it removes the rows that cannot be.

Questions

What is E.164 format?
The international phone number standard from the ITU. A number is written as + then the country code then the national number, with no spaces or punctuation, and at most 15 digits in total. +14155550123 is a US number in E.164.
Why does Excel remove the plus sign and leading zeros?
Excel reads +442079460958 and 02079460958 as numbers, so it drops the plus and the leading zero and may show long values in scientific notation. Format the column as Text before pasting, or import the CSV with the phone column set to Text.
What if my list has no country column?
Set a default country and every number without a + is read as a number from that country. Numbers that already start with + or 00 keep the country code they carry. For mixed-country lists, add the country column from your export first.
Does a valid number mean the phone works?
No. Valid means the number fits the country's numbering plan: right length, real prefix. Whether it is assigned and answered needs a carrier lookup, which this tool does not do.
Can it tell mobile numbers from landlines?
In many countries the prefix says whether a number is mobile, so the metadata can tell. In the US and Canada mobile and landline numbers share the same ranges, so the format alone cannot.
